Budweiser Plans to Set up a Unit in Bengal

Other than Carlsberg the renowned global beer brand, Budweiser which is a leading beer brand in USA is planning to set up a ‘state-of-the-art brewery’ in West Bengal. Lately it has been observed that this beer brand market is one of the fastest-growing beer markets in India. The State Commerce and Industries minister Partha Chatterjee stated that this US multinational is showing interest in building up a unit in the state. Sources say that Anheuser Busch India, the manufacturer of Budweiser will be setting up a few breweries in India seeing to the growing demand and among them in Bengal could be one of the destinations. A company source said that the company is looking forward to set up a brewery in the eastern part of India. The choice of the unit location will depend on government policy, land availability, water quality and other incentives. The company plans to invest Rs. 4 billion in each of the new plant and would require 50 acres of land for each of the brewery. If the unit is set up in Bengal then the consumers here will get it at a cheaper rate. Beer consumption in Bengal has grown up over the last few years. There has been an increase in the gap between the demand for beer and the production of beer in the state as the consumption of alcoholic beverages has jumped to 17%. A beer industry expert stated that the total consumption has exceeded 11 million cases and only 6.3 million cases are produced in the state. So the state has a good scope for setting up a unit that can cater easily to the excess demand. As of now the state has two breweries of which one is present at Kalyani owned by UB Group and another belong to the Carlsberg in Dhaniakhali. Budweiser already has two plants in India of which one is in Pune and the other one in Hyderabad. It wants to set up two-three brewers more in the country. The 3rd plant is going to be set up in Haryana and the fourth one in the east.

As the company is looking forward to set up a unit in West Bengal this would benefit the state economy. It would also cater to the consumption demand of the people of the state at a lower price as the transportation cost within the state will be quite low. This project will also boost other private investors who are willing to invest in the state to go ahead with their investment plans.
